How Sustainable and Environmentally Friendly is Our Furniture?

There is no doubt about it, that sustainability and impact on the environment are playing a fundamental point in our buying decisions and this certainly applies to high quality - bespoke manufactured furniture.

The fact is, long before it became a ‘popular’ buying criteria, Churchwood Design has always kept a ‘close eye’ on its impact with the environment. All Churchwood Design staff are local to the business and its workshops are kept at the optimum temperature for ‘working wood’ using timber ‘off cuts’ in its carbon-neutral workshop heating stove!

Churchwood Design makes some wonderful furniture creations repurposing old and reclaimed timbers allowing future generations to enjoy the characteristics, colour and patina of aged timbers that really tell a story. You can see, on our website, reclaimed oak as well as painted reclaimed pine furniture.

Churchwood Design ensures that all new timbers come from FSC accredited sources where specially managed forestations have been used.

From 2019, Churchwood Design has offered ‘Real Green’ - a range of bespoke, in-frame kitchen furniture that is made entirely from bamboo. Whilst bamboo is a solid material that is extremely hard wearing, stable and therefore ideal for painting, its real beauty comes in the knowledge that once bamboo is trimmed, it very quickly replenishes itself. In fact, a bamboo shoot can grow to 30 metres in just 5 years!

Bamboo enjoys a wonderful natural pattern, but as previously mentioned, it can also be painted in any shade (water based of course) OR you can combine natural and painted finishes to excellent visual effect.

Real Green comes with ISO, ‘green Mark’ and ‘Carbon Smart’ approval for your added peace of mind.
